Ferndale, MI — With the upcoming Detroit Lions regular season, we’re bound to see many restaurants, bakeries, and even chocolatiers around Metro Detroit crafting some Lions-themed foods, sweets, and baked treats!
One such Lions-inspired item recently caught my eye from a post I saw on Instagram featuring a Blue Lion chocolate made by a Belgian chocolatier in downtown Ferndale. It turns out, Quix Chocolate was inspired by the team to have some fun and build hype for the upcoming season with their lion chocolates, which were already being produced as part of an ongoing jungle-themed summer series.

I decided to stop by after work Tuesday afternoon to chat with the owner, David Ogloza, and check out these inspired chocolates, as well as learn about David’s other boutique chocolates. David told me he thought it would be a fun way to honor the upcoming season. And while I don’t have the biggest sweet tooth, I felt compelled to sample some of the other chocolates behind the counter to see what Quix Chocolate was all about.
I tried a piece of the Yuzu chocolate, Tiramisu, Amaretto, and Dubai chocolate, and was thoroughly pleased with each chocolate. I particularly enjoyed the Tiramisu, which had an espresso influence, as well as the Quix rendition of a Dubai Chocolate. The Dubai Chocolate was loaded with a crunchy and excellent pistachio ganache, complimented by the rich dark chocolate shell.
Each piece of chocolate encapsulated a balanced sweetness that wasn’t too overwhelming, yielding a great finished product in execution and significant attention to detail and artwork by David and his team. While several of the chocolates do use molds, the artwork and designs are all done by hand by the Quix Chocolate team. Check out some of their impressive designs below!

David also gave me a tour of operations to see how the chocolate factory works behind-the-scenes! I met two staff members who were hard at work, from packaging chocolates to actually crafting and meticulously forming new creations. David explained how all the various chocolates they design and size, each one gets tended to and designed in it’s own unique way because each staff member approaches them differently artistically.
One of my favorite designs was the massive Chocolate Roosters, of which I encountered about two different sizes, from a medium to a larger-sized chocolate (see below). I also enjoyed these twin little hedgehogs chocolates I discovered during the tour, and roughly quarter-sized turtle chocolates with a green shell pattern that exploded with passionfruit flavor!

David told me how he decided to reignite his family’s business several years ago, which was originally founded by his family in Belgium in 1949 in Lanklaar. David has had Quix Chocolate in Ferndale for about three years now, which can be found on the ground floor of the Dot Garage, located along W Troy Street. David’s store also offers things like Belgian ales, European wines, and seasonal themed chocolates and inspired gifts.
I also got to check out a case that featured specially-designed requests that Quix Chocolate had received over the years from patrons. I was also really interested in the array of Belgian ales that were available for purchase, because they would be a new and exciting experience, since who knows when I’d ever be able to try such signature imports again. I may have to circle back on that soon!

The Lions first official game for the 2025-2026 season kicks off Sunday, September 7th, at Green Bay. For more information about the Detroit Lions schedule for this upcoming season, click here.
I thanked David for letting me stop by to check out the Lions-inspired chocolate and to learn more about his chocolate business. I captured a few more photos of the chocolate products for sale along the shelves before heading back up to my car parked in the garage above. If you’re ever in the mood for some top-tier chocolate (think ‘Chocolate Guy’ from SpongeBob), then consider stopping into Quix Chocolate in downtown Ferndale for some exceptional chocolate varieties and great vibes. And of course, GO LIONS!!
